Get Ready to Party!

by Lauren Setum

Good morning, everyone! TGIF! Today, Salt and Pippa is celebrating the end of the last full work-week before the holidays by featuring local Twin Cities lifestyle magazine, Bow & Arrow. If you’re not familiar with the publication, now’s the time to check it out. This month’s ‘Celebration Issue’ marks the magazine’s first anniversary, and it’s chock full of sensational style, great food, party tips and tricks and much more. It’s truly a delight to read; visit Bow & Arrow’s website for the full issue.

Bow & Arrow’s Directors (L-R: Vanessa, Jaclyn, Laura, and Katie)

Paging through the anniversary/holiday issue, you’ll notice that Bow & Arrow’s directors are decked out in some fabulous dresses from ModCloth. This time of year, one can never have too many dresses to choose from, right? I’ve included a few additional picks from ModCloth below. Which is your favorite?

For a more neutral look, try these pumps by Charles David (available in both black and nude). I know I feature these shoes all the time, but they really are great. A true classic. If you want to add a bit more interest, check out Halogen’s Marla Suede Bow Pointy Toe Pump, the Camille Pump by Coach or the Valencia Pump by Charles David; all are available at Nordstrom. Grab some jewelry with a little sparkle, and you’re all set!

Procrastinators Unite!

by Lauren Setum

It’s officially the week (and a half) before Christmas; holy cow, time flies! If you’re still looking for gifts, be sure and place any online orders in the next day or so. Many companies won’t guarantee arrival by Christmas Eve after that. Not sure what to get? Take a look at my picks for last minute gifts:

Clock-wise from top left:

Book {Fashion}: My cousin got me this book for my birthday, and it’s fabulous! You can purchase it through Amazon.

Umbrella {Polka Dots}: This umbrella was previously featured in a Salt and Pippa New Outfit post in a different colorway. I love the various scales of the polka dots; the wood handle and black and white make it a classic. Check out Gina and May’s website for this umbrella and other fabulous designs.

Earrings {Gold}: Designed by local Minneapolis artist, Meghan J. Nelson, these earrings are modern and simple yet intriguing. Her work can be found here in the Twin Cities at I Like You and Paper Hat. If you’re not from the area, check out Meghan’s website.

Rolling Pin {Marble}: For the classy cook in your life; I much prefer this chic rolling pin to typical wooden ones. Get it at Sur la table.

Moroccan Leather Slipper {Coral}: There’s something I just love about these slippers from Heidi Merrick (available in other colors). The pop of color and 100% leather material make them a lovely, unique gift for the holidays.

Brownies {all different flavors}: These brownies, delivered anywhere in the U.S. straight from NYC, are scrumptious. My friends ordered me a box for my birthday, and let’s just say they didn’t last long. Plus, how awesome is the company name? Visit the Fat Witch Bakery website for more details. Oh yeah, and they were featured on Oprah’s list of favorite things in 2002…in case you think Oprah is more credible than me. Ha.

Cup {Yellow Taxi}: I was intrigued by this particular cup because it kind of looks like a really pretty paper cup. In fact, it is actually stoneware designed by Gwyneth Leech and available at Anthropologie. Buy a set of the same design or mix and match all the different designs. Up to you. Either way they’re all fabulous!

Dish Towel {Dachshunds}: For the person who loves wiener dogs. The sweetness of this towel from Anthropologie speaks for itself.

Print {Love Courageously}: This pretty print is from Sevenly. I love this source because $7 of every purchase (all year round) goes to charity. The charity changes each week so check the website to see what your dollars are supporting. This is one of their prints, and I love it…pun intended. There are many other delightful designs though, too, so be sure and take a gander.

Giving Angels Wings

by Lauren Setum

What do the Victoria’s Secret Angels’ wings and Rat King from The Nutcracker have in common? The answer may not be the greatest punch line, but it is pretty cool: They were both created by the same person! If you caught the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show the other night, you probably saw some pretty fabulous designs. Who said angels’ wings had to be white? Credit for the feathered frocks goes to Martin Izquierdo.

As if giving angels wings wasn’t enough, Izquierdo has also shared his talents with the Milwaukee Ballet. Their fabulous production of The Nutcracker would not be complete without a Rat King and infantry. Izquierdo proposed updated designs for these characters in the late 90s, and they are what you see on stage today. I learned this via a tweet from the Milwaukee Ballet during the VS fashion show and just had to feature it on Salt and Pippa. Milwaukee Ballet was kind enough to share a few concept sketches and photos with me as you can see below. For more on the costumes, visit Milwaukee Ballet’s blog page.

Bringing the Outside In

by Lauren Setum

It’s that time of year again…the time of year when Bambi runs and hides! As for the fish, well they’re pretty much a target all year long. Poor Nemo. I’m acknowledging the hunting season here on Salt and Pippa with some tasty…oops, I mean tasteful, paintings from local Twin Cities artists.

I’m not one to mount animal heads and put them on the wall, but I do LOVE this painting by Jill Van Sickle.

These bird paintings by Christina Hankins just make me plain happy!

Last but not least, a painting entitled Made to Float by Chris NystromI find this piece really fun and intriguing.

Classy Camo by KOKOON

by Lauren Setum

There are so many things I love about this wrap dress from KOKOON. This may be cliche, but it really is both comfortable and stylish. You could definitely pack this one in a suitcase and not have to worry about packing an iron, too. That’s always a plus. But my favorite aspect of this dress? The print, to me, is reminiscent of camo without being actual camo. Camo print is definitely a trend you’ll be seeing, and personally, I like it. I paired this twist-on-camo dress with a necklace and cuff bracelet from Sheer Addiction Jewelry and pumps from Charles David…oh, and a cute pup. He wanted to be part of the photo shoot, too!

I had so much fun working with KOKOON on Salt and Pippa’s first new outfit posts this week! They’re a great Minneapolis-based company (I love local!), and I’m so excited to attend their 25th Anniversary Fashion Show this coming Monday at Aria in the North Loop. If you’re in town, be sure to check it out.
